Synopsis
Follow a singer who unexpectedly dies during a tour in Japan, but her spirit lives on as she embarks on a journey to find humanity in the afterlife, which will be presented jointly at the 40th edition of vOilah! Spirit World is a multi-layered film that revolves around two very human impulses.
One, the creative instinct that drives artists, and the other, the emotional need to connect with family
At the very beginning of the film, we are introduced to three characters who have lost touch with both of these defining impulses. Singer-songwriter Claire (Deneuve), Yuzo (Sakai) – a former songwriter turned piano tuner – and his estranged son Hayato (Takenouchi), an anime director whose best work seems to involve making decisions and taking action in death and the afterlife, finding solutions to life’s unresolved problems.
The Spirit World answers this question in a very realistic, matter-of-fact way
Of course, this is a highly idealized perspective on that universal question – what happens when we die? Rejecting the fear of the unknown and choosing to help the living is a selfless quest that leads our main characters to fulfill their own humble desires.
A sweet and heartfelt cinematic experience for anyone who has felt the pull of creativity and the love of family
From a technical perspective, The Spirit World ticks all the boxes for audience engagement: it is a life-affirming message from the Spirit World: creative impulse can bear fruit to heal family bonds. The engaging performances draw in, the stunning landscapes of Takasaki and Chiba (and seascapes) are a feast for the eyes, and it pays tribute to the musical artists of the 1960s and 1970s – a golden age of creativity that you may never see again.
